Title
Bull
Description
English: Lead papal bulla, now sharply bent; the bend has caused stress to the metal. On one face are the busts of St Peter (on the right) and St Paul (on the left) with the usual distinguishing features; St Paul has a high forehead, straight hair and a pointed beard, and St Peter has hair and beard made up of pellets. Each is in a pelleted border, with the inscription SPA SPE just visible above and a cross just visible in between. On the other face is the name of the issuing pope; M - R / TINVS / PP IIII for Martin IV (ruled 1281-5). The letters have curly serifs. Bulls were attached to papal documents of all sorts; over 20 are now known from Suffolk.
