Title
Bull
Description
English: Lead papal bulla in excellent condition, a slightly flattened circle with the hole which took the cords tying the document closed clearly visible from top to bottom. One face has the relief busts of St Peter (on the right) and St Paul (on the left). They have the usual distinguishing features; St Paul has a high forehead, straight hair and a pointed beard, and St Peter has curly hair and beard both made up of pellets. They are both within a border of pellets and in between is a cross on a long stem. Above is the inscription SPA SPE. On the other face is the inscription BONI / FATIUS / PP: VIII, for the issuing Pope Boniface VIII (ruled 1295-1303). Papal bulls sealed all sorts of papal documents (land grants, indulgences etc.). Over 20 are now known from Suffolk, but not often in as good condition as this.
