fragrance are doubly welcome. The Polyanthus varieties need some protection through winter in the north, but will do finely without it in the south. They are exceedingly valuable for flowering in pots in the house. The Paper White Grandiflora and the Double Romanmay be made to conie into bloom in December, and this, with other varieties of Narcissus, will give a continuous suc-cession of profuse bloom untilspring. They thrive best in a cooltemperature. Pot as soon as received, ingood turfy loam, but let nomanure, rotted or otherwise, touch the bulbs. Set in a cool, dark room, and keep moderatelymoist for one or two months, sothat they may root; then removeto the window or conservatory forflowering. Do not cultivate toostrongly, as an extra vigor ofgrowth is detrimental to thepurity of the color of the flower. Note—In describing Narcissusreference is made to the peri-anth^ and trumpet. Thelatter is the long center, funnel-shaped tube and the perianthis the outer roic of petals or wings.
