Text Appearing After Image:
CROCUSES GROWING IN FIBER Miscellaneous Bulbs —Continued Dielytra Spectabilis (Bleeding Heart) A very Vaughan's Superb Crocus Spring Flowering Varieties . graceful pot-plant for greenhouse and room decoration, also for summer- flowering in shrubberies or shady borders. The elegant pendent branches are loaded with heart-shaped rosy crimson flowers, and furnished with graceful delicate green foliage. Height 1V2 to 2 ft. Strong roots. Each, 15c; 3 for 40c; postage Sc extra. Per dozen, $1.50; dozen weigh 3 lbs. One of the earliest flowers to open in Spring, the Crocus makes a very effective show when planted in masses or where three or four rows are ar- ranged in a border. They are perfectly hardy and can be left in the ground for several years without being disturbed. An effective method of planting is to scatter them over the lawn by digging up a small piece of sod here and there and placing one or two bulbs in each spot. This gives a pretty effect in early spring, and the tops can be cut along with the grass safely when first mowing is made. The large-flowering named varieties are ornamental when flowered in pots six or eight bulbs in 5-inch size. They will not flower if exposed to heat, nor must severe forcing be attempted. It is a mistake to plant Crocuses too deeply, an inch of covering being quite sufficient, any- thing deeper may cause them to fail to bloom. Dozen price includes postage. 100 bulbs weigh 3 lbs. Albion, blue, striped white. La Majesteuse, white, violet stripe. Baron von Bruno, dark blue. Madam Mina, white striped. David Rizzio, deep purple. Sir Walter Scott, white, blue stripe. Dandy, blue. Vaughan's "Pride of Holland" Strain of Named Crocus This is a special large flowered strain selected by one of our Dutch growers. They make larger bulbs and give larger blooms than ordinary named kinds, and are of special value for pot culture, the size of the blooms being very noticeable. We offer five colors. Please mention "Pride of Holland" strain when ordering. „, ,, ,, Mammoth Yellow. Sir Walter Scott, white, blue striped. David Rizzio. Queen Victoria, pure white. King of Blues, fine blue. Price, per dozen, 30c; 100, $1.75; 1000, $14.00. Unnamed Crocus, Separate Shades These bulbs are of good size and will produce large flowers and are ex- cellent for grass planting and borders. White 1 Blue and Purple I Doz. 100 1000 Striped and Variegated I $0.10 $0.75 $6.00 Yellow, large J Vaughan's Special Mixture Giant Flowered Crocus We make this mixture from named sorts only, adding a liberal amount of the mammoth "Pride of Holland" sorts. For planting outdoor in lawns, along borders or amongst shrubbery this mixture cannot be excelled. Doz., 20c; 100, $1.25; 1000, $10.00. Eranthis Hyemalis (Winter Aconite) Early in spring the golden blossoms of the Winter Aconite look charming, resting on an emerald-green cushion of leaves and forming a striking con- trast to the Snowdrop, Scilla and Chionodoxa. The foliage remains long after the flowers, making the plant especially valuable in moist situations, such as under trees. 8 inches high. (Price per dozen and 100 includes postage.) Per doz., 20c; per 100, $1.00; per 1000, $7.50. Erythronium (Dog's-Tooth Violet) Beautiful plants, perfectly hardy ; the foliage is usually charmingly varie- gated, and a mass of 15 or 20 plants is a pretty sight. Plants luxuriate in rather moist, partially shady positions, and do very nicely when grown in pots for winter blooming. Price per doz., 25c; per 100, $1.50 (postpaid); per 1000, $10.00. Vaughan's Giant Freesias These are well known for their delightful fragrance, the new colored ones which we offer, adding a new charm to the class. They should be potted up in August and stood outside until the approach of frost, then taken inside to the conservatory or a sunny, airy window, where they will flower freely from January onwards. The bulbs should be purchased at once so as to provide good root-growth before being taken indoors, which frost compels. Dozen and 100 prices include postage. REFRACTA ALBA.
