Description

These historic signs are really interesting. Pu'ukohola Heiau is a place of destiny. It is here that Keoua Ku'ahu'ula offered himself to his fate and where Kamehameha rose to power, and ultimately, immortality. Today, this National Historic Site stands in memory to Kamehameha I--a ruler regarded as the most celebrated Hawaiian who ever lived.

The kahuna (priest) Kapoukahi told Kamehameha that he would conquer all the islands of Hawai'i if he built the temple at Pu'ukohola and dedicated it to the war god Kuku'ilimoku. He also prophesied that war would end on Hawai'i when a sacrifice was made there. Kamehameha built the heiau, then invited his rival, Keoua Ku'ahu'ula, to Pu'ukohola. Keoua knew that if he accepted the invitation he would be killed so the heiau could be consecrated with the sacrifice of his body. Strong belief in spirituality and fate led to their meeting a Pu'ukohala. Keoua was slain and sacrificed, fulfilling the prophecy and paving the way for Kamehameha I to consolidate the islands.
