Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The building at the southeast corner of Main Street and Fillmore Avenue in Buffalo, New York is seen in this August 2022 photo. Built in 1916, the original design by architect Colson & Hudson of this two-story mixed-use structure, once characterized by an exterior of buff brick with Indiana limestone trim, is now largely hidden by modern Dryvit siding. However, some features can still be discerned, notably the arched window surrounds on the second floor, pilaster strips spaced periodically on the façade, and the cornice and stepped parapet lining the flat roof. Located at what was then the northern edge of a small but buzzing business district on upper Main Street, the construction of the building was commissioned by the Buffalo Cement Company and effected by contractor Harvey P. Kehr & Co. at a price of $40,000, and originally contained five apartment units on the upper floors and space for six retail tenants at street level, the initial ones of which included plumber Thomas H. Stamp, the Volker Bros. electrical contracting and supply firm, and - apropos given the timeframe - the offices of the Division 12 draft board. It's now home to a Bank of America branch, a local State Farm insurance agency, and the medical offices of Nickel City Chiropractic.
