Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The six-story office building at 1091 Main Street, in the Masten Park section of Buffalo, New York, as seen in September 2021. Completed in 2019 to a design by Smith + Associates Architects, 1091 Main was the brainchild of local developer-cum-political rabblerouser Carl Paladino, whose company Ellicott Development in 2010 purchased the deteriorating former Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church next door (seen to the left) at a city auction. Ellicott's subsequent actions - demolishing the former rectory and school, which he did in 2014, while presenting preliminary plans to convert the former church into twelve apartments, which would be financed through a historic preservation loan courtesy of the Buffalo Urban Development Corporation - stirred up quite a bit of controversy and debate among preservationists, some of whom condemned Ellicott for compromising the integrity of the complex with the demolition of the outbuildings, others of whom offered tepid praise for at least preserving the church itself (which many thought he might not do), and all of whom were left to grapple with the question of under what circumstances historic preservation can be reconciled with selective demolition. Finally, 2017 saw the unveiling of this office building on the site of the former rectory and school, with its composite façade of multicolored smooth-textured panels presenting a striking contrast with the traditionalist aesthetic of the 120-year-old church to which it's now connected. Medical offices comprise the majority of the tenants currently leasing space at 1091 Main.
