Fig. lOS gives a view of a jointadopted by the Chicago & Northwestern RailwayCompany to secure the advantages claimed forthe continuous rail joint without having to dis-card the angle bars; the objectionable featurewith this fastening is that the upward wave mo-tion has no greater resistance at the joint thanwith the angle bar alone; the plate assists inpreventing the joint becoming low and addslateral stiffness when the spikes are well driven. There are two functions to be performed byrail joints. One is to resist the rapid blows fromthe wheels of the engines and cars of fast pas-senger trains, and the other the slower blows fromfreight trains.
