front part of the face. Again, you may have lateral open-ings in the nose following specific ulceration. I have underobservation at the present time a patient with an opening due to CROOKED AXD OTHERWISE DEFORMED XOSES. 715 syphilitic ulceration, who has not yet agreed to an operation, butwho will possibly do so in time. I have drawn here a number of badly-shaped noses, whichcan be remedied by operation. We may have a nose thatsinks in at the top, in which there is not much bridge. This isgenerally due to want of proper development of the bones andcartilages forming the septum, and is sometimes called the sad-dle-back nose (Fig. 1, a). A similar nose is often found ininherited syphilis. Then we may meet with a nose bent a gooddeal to one side (Fig. 2). A slight degree of this deformity isvery common. Again, the organ may be not simply bent, butbent twice or irregularly twisted, as is shown in this drawing(Fig. 3). Bent and twisted noses are very often due to fractures Fig. 2. Fig. 3.

It is not unusual to see a nosewith a large lump on the end of it, which may be due to hyper-trophy of the lobe, or to a new growth developed there. Thisdisfiguring condition is frequently due to acne rosacea, causingunusual development of tissue. This I call the tuberous nose(Fig. 1, b). I often see a man who has exceeding hypertrophyof the tip of his nose from acne rosacea, and whose son curiouslyhas a similar nose, but not quite so greatly developed. Boththese men could be greatly improved by operation. The last 716 CROOKED AND OTHERWISE DEFORMED NOSES. variety of which I shall here speak is what I call the angularnose (Fig. i, c), because of the angular appearance of its dorsum, due to an unnatural bony prominence at the lower margin of thenasal bones. A lady came into my office a short time ago withsuch an elevation on the middle of the nose, due to a bony massresulting from a fracture in infancy. There is also some stop-ping-u
