Description

In celebration of #AfricanAmericanHistoryMonth, we honor the 19th century African-American regiments known as Buffalo Soldiers. These soldiers fought so fiercely, bravely and proudly for the United States that they earned even the respect of many who had initially treated them with contempt. Lieutenant John Pershing observed: “They fought their way into the hearts of the American people.”

Based at nearby Fort Garland, the 9th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers patrolled the San Luis Valley in the 1870s, protecting both early settlers and tribes. Archeologists discovered a US Cavalry bridle bit during excavations near the scene of this painting, likely used by Fort Garland Cavalry.
