It must be a fire-bell, which if a firehappened to break out, would begin to make a dinningclang to warn the people and to call them to the rescue.If we did have a fire it would be a magnificent sightfrom here and I should like to see the spectacle, but Idont want it to come too near, for the temple would bein danger and especially the roof with its tiles and myselfamongst them. Thus the Demon Tile talked to himself about manythings he saw, and then craning his neck farther up heglanced over the whole stretch of country before him, butowing to his exalted position on the temple roof, everything on which his eyes rested appeared far beneath him,and small and insignificant in comparison to himself. Thenhe began to feel elated at his position and in his arrogantfolly and pride began to think that he was superior toeverything and everybody around him and he consequent-ly said to himself:
