Thenshe slipped her bare feet into her clogs and pattered up tothe plant to get a nearer view, her brown face wrinkled allover like a withered apple lit up with smiles. Then the old man set to work. He brought somewater in a wooden pail and washed the le.ves and petalsof the yellow chr\santhemum very carefully, picking off ashe did so every leaf he thought unnecessary, and everybud on the stem, so that all the nourishment from the rootsshould go to the crowning blossom. When this was donehe dressed her in beautiful crepe robes and gave her foodto eat; and then he placed her in a sunny flower bed,sheltered irom the rain and the wind by a roof madeof reeds. In a few dajs so changed was the yellow chrysan-themum that she hardly knew herself. Day by day underthe clever gardeners care she grew to be a large fineflower, till at last her petals became so long and full andher head so heavy that she had to be propped up by a THE CHRYSANTHEMUM CREST ^7

She was veryhappy and content for her dreams of reaching the fineworld beyond her native field had been realized, yet in themidst of her new happiness and grandeur, she could not. help thinking sometimes of the sister-flower she had sowillingly left behind in the lonely meadow, and when sheremembered her sisters tears at parting and her lastentreaties not to be left behind, she felt guilty in theenjoyment of her pleasant, easy life. At such times she 88 THE CHRYSANTHEMUM CREST would try to distract her thoughts by looking- at the gayflowers near her and by watching the visitors as they cameand went round the garden.
