Some young bonzes were sitting studying in the nextroom, and hearing strange unaccountable noises in theirmasters apartment, peeped in from the fusuma (slidingpaper screens which divide one room from another). Someof them leapt backwards with astonishment at the sightwhich met their gaze. They saw a tea-kettle walking about on the legs ofa badger, with a head in front and a tail behind. Thenthey all cried out Taihen da ! Taihen da ! Oh, look,look ! how dreadful! The tea-kettle is bewitched ! Whatshall we do ? Hearing their excited talk, another bonze ran to jointhem. • We must be either dreaming or out of oursenses, said the new-comer, to see what we are seeing.There is the tea-kettle walking about on feet! Look, look ! It is most uncanny ! The creature iscoming this way, exclaimed one. * Take care, I dontlike the look of the thing ! Then all the young priests entered their masters roomand called him.

HOW DREADFUL ! THE TEA KETTLE IS BEWITCHED ! THE KETTLE OF GOOD FORTUNE 53 Master Priest, Master Priest, wake up, please; some-thing strange has happened. The old priest opened his eyes, saying drowsily, What is the matter ? How noisy you all are ! * This is not the time to ask questions, said theboldest of his puipils. Look there ! feet have grownout of the kettle, and it is walking about the room now,look ! and the speaker pointed to the other side of theroom. What do you say ? said the bewildered old man. Feet have grown from the kettle ! Where? Where ? Then the old man rubbed his eyes and looked abouthim for the walking tea-kettle, when, lo and behold ! thereit was quietly sitting in its old place on the box beforehim, in its usual form. So he would not believe what theyoung priests had told him. * What foolish boys you are, he said to the bewilder-ed young men. Isnt the kettle here before me ?
