So the village chief carried the white chrysanthemumhome with him, and his wife and servants helped her withher toilet, and dressed her in lovely robes of silk andcrepe. When all was ready and she had been regaled THE CHRYSANTHEMUM CREST 93 with a delicious meal, she was bidden to enter a finepalanquin and carried like a lady of noble rank to theDaimios palace.

SHE WAS BIDDEN TO ENTER A FINE PALANQUIN. When the Daimio saw White Chrysanthemum he waspleased beyond all words and said that she was exactlyv/hat he wanted for his crest. Everyone in the greathousehold, down to the innumerable retainers, praised herbeauty and perfection. She was placed on a flower standin the garden opposite the great lords room vvhere hecould see her at sunrise, noon and sunset. Artists were 94 THE CHRYSANTHEMUM CREST sent for from all parts of the countr) to come and drawdesigns of the sixteen-petalled chrysanthemum for hisfamily crest. Day after day the hitherto despised andneglected flower found herself surrounded by a group ofadmiring artists, whose one idea was to draw her asartistically as possible. Her different aspects were studied under every moodof the day and of nature, on bright or cloudy or rainydays. They watched her in the soft light of the morningsunshine, in the dazzling brilliance of the noon, and againwhen the shadows of the evening fell athwart
