Buckle plate |

Description |
English: An incomplete medieval copper-alloy buckle plate, the front half of which now survives, it is rectangular in shape measuring 30mm in length and 22mm in width. This buckle plate has a rectangular pin slot and two rivet holes through its attachment edge. The front face is decorated with a border groove, a central stem with a fleur de lis terminal and to either side of this stands an opposing animal, in side profile. Both animals are standing on their hind limbs and have long curvilinear tails with fleur de lis terminals, the bodies are small as are the front limbs, the snouts are long and mouths open and pointed oval shaped ears laid back. The animals are perhaps likely to represent mythical creatures. There is also a trace of gilding one the front face of the plate. |
