Title
Buckle plate
Description
English:
Gilt copper alloy early medieval buckle plate dating from the 13th-14th century. The buckle plate is rectangular with two rivet holes on the right and two (possibly curved) lugs to the left. It was probably made from a folded over sheet of metal, but we have no image of the reverse or side view so cannot be certain. The obverse is decorated with griffin (body of a lion, head of an eagle) which suggests a high medieval date. If it was earlier, the beast would appear more stylised and less realistic. The griffin is shown walking right with the long tailed curved backwards over its back. The head and neck are erect, looking forwards.

There are some parallels on the database: BERK-FE2643, LVPL-2913D3 and NLM-4CA598. Most of the known examples seem to show the beast going right-left unlike this one which is left to right.

NB: This is a rally find that was not seen by the FLO in person. Images and findspot information were kindly provided by the rally organiser.
