Buckle plate |

Description |
English: A copper-alloy strap end, this strap end consists of a complete front plate and an incomplete back plate, the two plates are held together with two in situ copper-alloy rivets, one in each corner of the attachment end. The complete front plate is rectangular in shape measuring 53mm in length and 30mm in width. It is slightly narrower in width at its terminal end. It has a circular aperture in the centre of the attachment end. The front face of this plate is decorated with two pairs of longitudinal grooves, inbetween each pair of grooves there are longitudinal rows of incised zig zags. The back face of the front plate is undecorated. The back plate is incomplete and now measures 29mm in width and 8mm in lenght. It is possible that originallly this strap end was one folded sheet, which was folded width ways, rather than two sheets, however, this is difficult to proove as the edges of the incomplete back plate and the terminal of the front plate are worn. This strap end is medieval and is most likely to be 14th century in date. |
