Title
buckle plate
Description
English: An inscribed, copper alloy buckle plate or possible a strap end. It is rectangular and broken at both ends, across a cenral rivet holes at one end. One face is decorated with an incised line along each long edge, and a pair of similar lines in the centre. The space between the border and central lines is decorated. On one side is a series of curved lines which seem to represent foliage. On the other is an inscription of which the only recognisable letter is a retrograde N in the centre. To one side of the N is a symbol like digital square number 8, and to the other, 2 uprights with a diagonal wavy line between them. The reverse is undecorated and there are traces of gilding on the front. The object probably dates from the 12th or 14th century.

Inscriptions on strap fittings are fairly unusual. The meaning of the letters is not clear, and they may be an attempt at lettering by an illiterate craftsman. The closest parallel on the database is SF-0B21E1 which has similar parallel lines along the centre of the plate. Other inscribed examples are GLO-FCC147, SWYOR-B218B1 and SUR-987874.
