Title
Buckle frame of Early-Medieval to Medieval date
Description
English: A cast copper-alloy(?) buckle frame of Early-Medieval to Medieval date. The buckle has a D-shaped frame with expanded outer edge, narrowed oval bar and prominent incised pin rest. It is missing its pin due to old breaks. The outer edge is triangular in section, set at an angle of 45 degrees to the plane of the frame and with extensive moulded decoration on its outer face. This comprises a central transverser pin rest formed from a projecting V-shaped moulding that has a deeply incised pin groove. To either side the front face has worn and damaged incised decoration, possibly comprising an incised transverse zig-zag motif with dots or additional motifs in each angle of the zig-zag. The entire object has a very grey appearance, which perhaps suggests a high lead or tin content to the alloy. It measures 32.28mm in width, 23.35mm in length, 7.80mm in thickness and 10.92g in weight.

This is a buckle frame of uncertain date, with no close parallel as yet identified. It is possible that the buckle dates to the later Early-Medieval period (c.9th-11th centuries AD?), although a later date range in the Medieval period cannot be ruled out entirely.
