Title
Buckle fragment: Medieval to Post-Medieval buckle fragment
Description
English: A cast copper-alloy Medieval buckle fragment. The fragment is sub-rectangular in shape and would have come from one side of the buckle loop, where the pin would have rested. The outer edge of the buckle has two protruding integral squared stepped prongs, one on either side. Between these are four smaller protruding prongs. In the centre of the fragment is a 18.27mm long tapering recess, where the pin would have rested. Either side of this is incised decoration forming square and rounded shapes that appear to be in the shape of a letter 'A' on one side and 'V' on the other. There are also circular impressions that appear to have been hammered into the surface.

A buckle of comparable form was found at the village of Rougiers, Var, France (Démians d'Archimbaud 1980, 495; fig. 466.26); other examples can be found illustrated in Fingerlin (1971, 193; especially no. 326).

The buckle measures 49.81mm in length by 36.54mm in width. Is 3.97mm thick and weighs 31.48g.
