Title |
Buckle and plate |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper alloy buckle, D shaped with an off-set bar, section oval with a swollen outer edge, no decoration, articulation of the wrap-around pin present. Plate 1.0mm thick, rectangular, notches at distal end may be a result of damage. It is divided into two areas, one, closest to the loop is defined by an incised line around its edge and contains five, 4.4mm diameter dome headed rivets the shafts of which extend on the under side of the plate. The other part of the plate contains two, 2.0mm diameter holes which are empty. Around these is a fan like pattern of close packed, incised, radial lines. The face of the plate bears traces of gilding but the object is poorly preserved and it is not possible to tell if the buckle was gilt. In London buckles of this form occur in contexts dated to c. 1200-1350 (Egan and Pritchard, 1991, Fig. 42). |
