Title
Buckle Plate
Description
English: A copper alloy Medieval buckle plate fragment. It is the upper part of a rectangular, folded plate, and is broken off at the fold, the lower part missing due to old breaks. There is a rectangular-shaped slot for the pin and two rivet holes, one in each corner on the side opposite the pin slot. One has a rivet in situ and the other in incomplete due to old breaks. There is embossed decoration of a rear-ward facing animal, occupying most of the plate, probably representing a lion looking back at his curling tail. The animal is set at right angles to the pin-slot terminal. The buckle plate measures 19.85mm in length, 16.89mm in width and weighs 1.82g. Examples of similar design from Medieval London (Egan 1991, fig.72, no 500, p.112, and no. 530) may date to the thirteenth century.
