Title
Buckle
Description
English: A complete oval copper-alloy buckle frame with surviving copper-alloy pin. The outer edge of the frame is expanded and measures 10.8mm at its widest point. It is decorated with a lower border groove and small openwork circular perforations. There is a lower row of four of these and one perforation to either side of two parallel solid projecting human heads, which protrude from the central upper half of the outer edge. Each head is oval, measuring 5.7mm in length and 4.5mm in width. They have no hair and look like skulls with hollow circular eyes, triangular projecting noses and a transverse groove to represent their mouths.

The bar of this frame is offset and narrowed and the copper-alloy pin is attached to it via an open loop; it is complete but bent. The frame measures 22.3mm in width and 17.9mm in length.

This buckle is most likely to be 13th century in date; it has been identified by Helen Geake as being similar to buckles enamelled in the Limoges style. It is similar to another oval buckle frame found at Laxfield (see SF-51D5C3).
