Ce mollusque bivalve est habituel de la Mer Méditerranée et de l'Atlantique Nord-Est, où il vit enfoui dans le sable des zones infra et circalittorales. La bucarde épineuse mesure en moyenne 7 cm, allant toutefois jusqu'à 10 cm dans certains cas. Ses siphons, qu'elle laisse dépasser lorsqu'enfouie dans le sable, lui permettent de se nourrir de phytoplancton et particules en suspension. The spiny cockle measures on average 7 cm, however reaching up to 10 cm in some cases.
