Summary
[edit]DescriptionBryn Hafod-y-Wern Slate Quarry - geograph.org.uk - 827451.jpg |
English: Bryn Hafod-y-Wern Slate Quarry A large quarry with large problems. These included too much water in the pit which could not be self-drained, the need to uphaul the quarried rock from the ever deepening pit (over 200 ft deep) to the mill and the waste further up again to the waste tips and, above all, the scarcity of water to operate the mill and the uphauling inclines. Water had to be fetched by means of a 7km long leat from Cwm Caseg SH6764and thus had to be used sparingly. The quarry, first worked in 1780 by the Penrhyn Estate was abandoned by it in the 1840s because of the high working costs. It was then purchased by the Royal Bangor Slate Company which worked it until 1884 when Lord Penrhyn, at a whim, decided to breach the leat thus depriving the quarry of its means of power. |
