Summary
[edit]DescriptionBrush-Bagnall 3065.jpg |
English: Brush-Bagnall 515hp Bo-Bo diesel-electric shunter (1st batch) No.3065 of 1955, British Steel Corporation (originally Steel Company of Wales) No.903, shunting at the Abbey Works, Port Talbot, 09/69. Scanned photograph taken with Kowa SET. Designed for heavy duties at SCOW's steel works to supplement 5 ALCO Bo-Bo's bought in 1950, more purchases of which were prevented by post-war import controls. Three batches were built to the larger US loading gauge of the railway system of the Abbey Works:
3063-5 of 1955, SCOW Abbey Works Nos.901-03, with a 515hp Mirrlees J6 6-cyl engine; 3111-3 of 1956-7, SCOW Abbey Works Nos.951-53, with a 750hp Mirrlees JS6 6-cyl engine; In 1992-3 three (907-9) were rebuilt by Hunslet-Barclay, Kilmarnock with a Perkins engine. 3137-3143 of 1957, SCOW Abbey Works Nos.904-10 which reverted to the unsupercharged 515hp Mirrlees J6 engine but had the deeper, heavier frames of the second batch. |
