Notes | "Brush belonging to Jesse Piper who had it at the Battle of Waterloo in the year1815". Paper label on back of brush- "This Brush belong to my grandfather Jesse Piper. He had it with him at the Battle of Waterloo in the year 1815. He landed in Auckland 5th August. the name of the boat was Ramilles 1847. Mary King (donor) is the granddaughter of the above named." Jesse Piper was born 1799 near Tunbridge Wells, Sussex, England. He enlisted with the 58th Regiment underage at 15 years. He served 3 years in France and Spain and 16 years, 3 months in New Foundland. He married Mary Regan in Ireland and they had two sons, George and William, born in New Foundland. Jesse Piper was discharged from Chatham in 1841 (with the rank of Sergeant) suffering from enlarged veins in both legs. The family left Jersey to come to Onehunga with the Fencibles. Jesse died in Auckland in September 1847 within weeks of arriving in NZ. See The Royal New Zealand Fencibles 1847-1852. |
