Description
English: Roman altar to Neptune, found in the River Tyne in Newcasle when the Swing Bridge was being built. It is dedicated to Neptune by the Sixth Legion, surnamed the victorious pious and faithful. The engraving is from Bruce, John Collingwood (1885) The hand-book to the roman wall (3rd ed.), Longmans, Green & Co . At the time of writing (1885), the altar was at the Museum of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle.
