overgrown milk churn stand

Description

detail photograph
Remains of a milk churn stand at the border between Kyleroe and Brownstown. The farm using it would have been in Kyleroe. I have some doubts as to the identification, but a local farmer confirmed that this is one. It has an unusual shape, almost hexagonal in its footprint (see detail photograph). This is the last remaining one on that road which used to have 9 milk churn stands outside every farm. Quoting a farmer now in his 70s who grew up along this road: "There were several milk stands on this road, but most were removed when they became unused. There was one opposite the back gate to my brother's farm at New Orchard. The next was at the entrance to Bergin's farm. Then there was one, and I think it is still there, at J.’s [name redacted for GDPR reasons] on the bend past the little cottage. Next was at Kealy's. Then there was one at our gate, another at the next bungalow down the road (The Lawn). There was one at the next farm on the right and one up the lane opposite, as they could not agree to share. The last one was after you turn left at the end of the road you can see it at the next junction. There was a truck from the creamery that collected the cans each am, even on Sunday."
