English: Brownlee's Canadian type double decker type mill at Carluke. This unit had a concrete foundation and three boilers which supplied the engine which developed 50 horse power. It opened 18 October 1907 and was fed with logs from Rimu and Ronga Valleys. The lower sections of the prized stand of timber in the Opouri Valley were all that they could cut at the Marlborough Timber Co. had been granted milling rights for the head of the valley.
The mill had a capacity of 600.000 feet per month but never reach this. In 1915 they had completed their cutting rights and the mill closed. |
