Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Brown-King House, 617 Niagara Street, Buffalo, New York, April 2022. A fine example of the Second Empire style that was all the rage in upper-class residential architecture at the time of its construction (c. 1869), this three-story manse showcases all the requisite characteristics of the aesthetic: red brick exterior, mansard roof faced with slate shingles and pierced with pedimented dormers, arched windows, and exquisite Classical detailing throughout (note the ornate ornamental brackets underneath the projecting eave of the mansard). Of particular note is the projecting bay window on the first floor, where a trio of single light windows are intercalated with engaged Ionic columns decorated with rope molding on their lower half, and crowned with exquisite original art glass. The house was built for Daniel Brown (1820-1894), a resident of Buffalo from its early history who held a number of different occupations related to the lakegoing trade: at various times he was a ship chandler, forwarding agent, wholesale grain merchant, and also spent a period "travel[ing] for New York and Albany tea houses", according to his obituary. Brown only lived in the house for about three years, selling it in 1871 to Scottish-born druggist William King, Jr. (c. 1823-1881), who lived there with his family until his death.
