In 1850, John I. Brown & Sons started selling Brown's Bronchial Troches, a concoction that allegedly treated colds, coughs, and throat disease. In 1865, the company partnered with Jeremiah Curtis & Sons to promote other medicines, including Mrs. Winslow's Soothing Syrup, a morphine-infused product for children who are teething.
