Summary

[edit]
Description
English: In 1813, Nantes had 91 "washing boats" on the Loire and the Erdre. In 1842, there were only 50 of them, larger and meeting the construction standards that had been defined. They were then called "wash boats". In 1860, between 600 and 700 women still worked there daily: washers, laundresses, linen maids and day laborers. The large drying racks on the banks of the Erdre give an idea of the quantity of laundry processed daily. Still 644 in 1901, they gradually became fewer in number, just like the washboats, whose number diminished at the beginning of the 20th century, due to the development of "bath-washhouses", then laundry rooms in bourgeois houses. There were only twenty-nine of them left on the Erdre in 1930, before their complete disappearance after the war.
