Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Brothers-Werner House, 104 Oxford Avenue, Buffalo, New York, October 2020. Though it's above all representative of the Queen Anne style of architecture (the ultimate distinguishing characteristic is the front porch, with its twinned Tuscan columns), the design of the house betrays a heavy influence of the Shingle style with its sprawling, low-to-the-ground massing and wide gables. More unusually, the turret requisite of the style is flat-roofed, and is placed to the left of an equally unusual ovate stained-glass window bedecked with narrow voussoirs at its top and sides. Its original owner - John L. Brothers (1835-1916), auditor for the Board of Park Commissioners - did not stay in the house for long after its 1900 completion; by 1902, it had passed into the hands of George W. Werner (1877-1965), who with his sons owned and operated an eponymous carriage and harness factory (and, later, auto parts distribution facility) on Main Street. Werner lived in the house until 1907.
