Sufficient unto the day, etc. (this is thetext—here goes for the sermon, which will not bedivided into three heads). . . . 160 WALTER BACHE (1862 I have seen a great deal of Liszt, and heard himplay several times; also had three lessons. TheRitters have got a piano, and he will go theresometimes and play to them. He gives lessons toSgambati,1 a very talented young pianist here, anda particular friend of mine, and also plays Sonatas,etc., with Ramacciotti, a violinist. We are betteroff for music here than in Florence. RamacciottisQuartett concerts begin on Wednesday; I shallplay at the second or third one. By-the-by Iplayed Schumanns A Minor Sonata with viola,Mozarts G Major, and Mendelssohns D MinorTrio (got up in a week) at the German Club, andhad great success. 1 Giovanni Sgambati ; Liszts pupil, now the renownedvirtuoso in Rome.

A Vrome (continued) I863 LETTER home, early in the New Year,contains the following :— Liszt is very kind and I hear him play often,though I have only had three or four lessons asyet. ... I have some very good friends amongthe musicians here, especially Sgambati, the pianoplayer, who is very talented, and one of the nicestfellows I ever knew: also a young violin player,who is a really good fellow, besides being remark-ably handsome and—what shall I call it?—fasci-nating. It is quite as much pleasure to see himand Sgambati play together as to hear them. To Mme. Laussot. Rome, January 30, 1863. I was very glad indeed of your most jolly letter,which gave me great pleasure, and which I wontdelay any longer answering, Liszt has received11 i62 WALTER BACHE (1863 your book-marker, for which he was very muchobliged: he intends to write to you soon.
