Dr. Dobell says : *1 The highly educated SOME REMARKS ON PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS. 345 narrow-minded conceit of the present day makes people think thatthey are bound to understand everything, however much it may bebeyond their comprehension, and when they find themselves in aposition which they cannot understand, instead of trusting to theauthority of a wise and instructed counselor, who has devoted hislife to the subject, they rush at the first chance of some simpleformula or belief, some striking flag on which to pin their faith. The inhalation of dust of various kinds, and particularly of thatin which irritating, sharp particles are contained, should be avoidedby persons subject to bronchitis, and by such others as might bejudged susceptible to tuberculosis.

It is often contended that we are living in a progressive age;may it not then be admissible to question : is there no way possi-ble by which we might respectfully convince our city authorities-as to the inconsiderate and most outrageous existing disciplinepertaining to the necessary removal of ashes and garbage fromdwellings, and the occasional but most indiscreet time of the daychosen for cleaning our notably filthy thoroughfares? Can we not,jointly, awaken our city authorities and make evident to them theexistence of the most absurd inconvenience, and the impendingdangers to which the public is constantly exposed in inhaling anatmosphere densely charged not only with various irritating parti-cles of dust, but likewise with offensiveness and a numerous varietyof micro-organisms.
