Description |
English: Fragment of a Roman Trumpet brooch, probably of 1st Century AD date. The brooch fragment comprises of the head and the upper bow, and is elaborate and heavily ornamented. The relief decoration of this type has been linked to Late Celtic styles by Boon & Savory (1975) and suggests an early date within the type. The rear of the head has the remnants of lugs either side of an oval recess to secure the axis bar, suggesting the brooch employed a hinge secured by a semi-tubular mechanism. Above the oval recess is a flush circular plug of bronze, this may be a means of attaching the rosette ornament at the front of the head, or possibly a device associated with a now missing chain loop. The head is decorated with a central rosette or boss flanked on either side with a spiral scroll. The upper bow has a vertical ‘tulip-like’ device above the heavy, lateral ribs, which seem to have contained pellets within rectangular boxes. The rear of the bow is flat. Evidence of silvering survives on the rear of the head and areas of the bow. |
