Title
Brooch (side)
Description
English: Roman bow brooch of unusual form and type. The brooch has a hinge mechanism enclosed within short wings. The head of the bow is arched with a D-shaped cross section, which gradually thins as it approaches an integral moulding of circular cross section with slight side knobs. The bow after this is gently concave in profile and gradually tapers in before expanding back out at a rounded moulded foot. The bow is flat except for the catch plate, which begins as a low rib. The pin is present and of circular cross section with a flattened head.

Decoration on the bow is both cast and incised, the wings are decorated with an incised triangle containing punched dots. The head of the brooch has a series of opposing cast chevrons. The bow is plain apart from an incised line along each side. At the foot the sidelines are linked to the catch plate by a single chevron.

The brooch is in very good condition and has a mid-brown patina. The head of the brooch exhibits a few minor casting flaws, and the end of the pin is bent.
