Title
brooch
Description
English: A complete cast copper alloy oval plate brooch with gilded surfaceand blue glass intaglio. 2nd to 3rd century AD. The pin and spring are complete, with three turns of the spring visible and fixed through the vertical lug. The pin is 22mm long and 1.3mm in diameter. The catchplate is mostly complete, with small chips from the returning edge.

The plate brooch is oval in plan, 25mm long and 20mm wide. The front surface has a series of S shapes radiating around the central raised lip and gilded. The raised lip borders an oval depression 14mm long and 8mm wide. The lip holds in place a dark blue glass paste 'gem' intaglio. A small section, 3mm wide, is missing from the lower portion of the intaglio. Due to this we can see that the glass paste does not fully fill the central depression, and the paste which would have held the intaglio in place is now missing. The motif is possibly a Victory standing left.

Similar brooches can be seen in Hattatt's Visual Catalogue, figures 1217 - 1219, page 365.
