Title
Brooch (Colchester type) section
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy Colchester brooch dating from the late Iron Age to Roman, c.15-60 AD. It is missing the foot, the catchplate, the spring and the pin. The plain, narrow wings are very damaged; one is bent backwards and the other forwards. The forward hook extends from the head and would originally have secured the external chord. Only part of one coil of the spring is present. Part of the chord still survives under the front hook. However this whole area is very badly worn and corroded. The undecorated bow is wider than typical Colchester type brooches and it is also much thicker (measuring 7.6mm in width at the top of the bow and 4mm in thickness).

The width measurement given below relates to the width across the bent wings, as this is the widest point of the brooch. The length measurement relates to the entire length of the brooch.

The brooch has been coated in lacquer so it is difficult to see if there is any loss of surface. The brooch is otherwise undecorated and is dark brownish-green in colour. The brooch is in a poor condition. Similar examples can be seen in Hattatt, 2000, pp297, Fig. 155-156.
