Title
Brooch, nummular
Description
English: Cast copper alloy nummular brooch, 24mm in diameter and bearing, on its face, a profile bust of a man, facing right. His face is in moulded detail with a sharp nose, curved chin and a large pellet eye surmounted by an L shaped brow. The hair is represented by a series of short radiating lines surrounded by a line of small pellets. Around the edge of the disc are three circumferential rings of raised pellets, each smaller than the pellets in the ring they surround. On the back of the brooch is perforated lug through which the pin was attached. The catch plate is missing.

This brooch belongs to series originally based on coins of the Carolingian Emperor Louis the Pious (814-840) which, in turn, were based on late Roman coins. The three rows of pellets around the edge represent the rings of beaded filigree mount which surround the coin on the original brooches. These brooches were copied with increasing crudity, this example is likely to have been imported from the continent, but may be a local product.

Brooches of this type are discussed in Leahy, K 2006, 'Anglo-Saxon coin brooches' in B. Cook and G. Williams Coinage and History in the North Sea World c. 500-1250 pp 267-286
