Title
Brooch, cruciform
Description
English: Gilt copper alloy cruciform brooch of Aberg's Group V, 'Florid type'. Style I decoration, some panels of silver plating. Now broken into two parts and bent. This is a fine brooch although the decoration is rather crude. The three knobs were cast integrally with the head plate and not attached by pins as on some examples. Each knob bears two Central eyes separated by a plain 'nose' area either side of which are pairs of opposed eagles' head. At the ends of the knobs are plain panels which bear the remains of silver plates which appear to have been soldered in place. In the centre of the head-plate is a panel of devolved Style I decoration, on which zoomorphic features can be seen. The top of the bow bears a central knob from which radiate a series of incised lines. The lappets are plain and are likely to have been silver plated. Between them is a panel of highly devolved Style I decoration. The foot is in the form of an animal's head with two eyes under the lappets below which an expanding panel is dominated by an ellipse. Either side of this panel are two eagles' head and beneath it is a further silvered panel. On the underside of the brooch are two lugs which held the spring and a catch plate.
