Title
Brooch, cruciform
Description
English: Cast copper-alloy knob from a cruciform brooch. It has a flat-backed D-shaped cross-section, and a deep groove across the centre separating a rounded upper half from a lower moulding. The lower moulding has the remains of two extremely worn grooves along it, just visible at either end but completely worn away in the centre. There is a slot across the flat base to fix it to the headplate, and towards the flat reverse is a hole which runs the full length of the knob to hold the pin bar. This is now blocked with corrosion from the iron pin bar. There is also iron staining elsewhere on the knob, and some copper corrosion.

Length 13.1mm; Width 12.8mm; Thickness 7.1mm; Mass 4.72g

This knob is virtually identical to the knob surviving on brooch FAKL-507902, found close by, and is likely to have originally come from that brooch. It is of Åberg's Group II-IV (Åberg, 1926, 28-56), and dates to the sixth century AD. The discovery of this object in East Yorkshire occasions no surprise.
