Place of discovery Found in December 1921 at Meroe, Sudan, in pyramid V of the north cemetery (Begarawiya North 5), identified as the tomb of prince Arikhankharer and dated to the mid-1st century A.D. A second very similar bronze head, now in the National Museum of Sudan in Khartoum (inv. 1948; see Chamoux 1960), was found in the same tomb.
Notes In addition to the head in Khartoum, a bronze hand (MFA 24.897) and foot (MFA 24.896) were also found in the tomb, and considered by Dunham, followed by Comstock and Vermeule, to be part of a statuette to which one of the two heads belonged. Chamoux, followed by Török, rejects the association and considers the two heads more likely to be furniture attachments.
