Title
Bronze age palstave
Description
English: A copper alloy Bronze Age palstave. It is an unlooped type with a predominant stop ridge dividing the septum from the shield shaped section. The sides are flanged and taper to a point. It is ‘H’ shaped in section and measures 143.32mm x 54.85mm x 27.57mm, weighing 423g. There is a slight green patina on the blade and side flanges. It dates from the early Middle Bronze Age (c.1500 – 1400 BC) and is probably part of the Acton phase of metalworking. There is a similar example to this in Moore and Rolands’ ‘Bronze Age metalwork in Salisbury Museums’; plate VII, fig. 15.
