Title
Bronze Age to Iron Age chape fragment (possibly)
Description
English: Part of an unidentified copper-alloy artefact.

The surviving piece is of sub-conical form, curving near to the damaged point. The break, located at the wider end, is probably due, at least in part, to the presence of a circular-sectioned slot which extends transversely, but stops short of completely perforating the object. The surfaces of the object have been decorated by a series of parallel grooves, aligned longitudinally. The extent of this pattern is difficult to ascertain due to the level of corrosion on the otherwise darkly patinated surfaces.

Length: 33.1mm; maximum width (at point of slot): 14.4mm; depth at slot: 11.9mm; weight: 15.4mm.

This piece represents approximately half of a so-called 'moustache-shaped' object. This enigmatic and poorly understood group of artefacts is believed to date from the Middle Bronze Age to Early Iron Age. For a detailed discussion of the dating evidence for them, see PAS record WAW-83E1E3, which also lists several other such pieces recorded on the database. Although the purpose of these objects is unknown, their form suggests that they may have been scabbard chapes.
