Title
Bronze Age tanged knife
Description
English: An incomplete Middle Bronze Age cast copper alloy tanged knife. The tang is broadly rectangular with rounded corners and expands in width gradually into the blade (from c. 16.8mm to 21.2mm). Towards the end of the tang is a circular perforation, c. 4.5mm in diameter. The blade has a flat hexagonal cross-section, being shallowly bevelled on both faces from a flattened central strip. It narrows from the wide point of 21.2mm to c. 17.5mm at the point at which it has broken. The diagonal break is old and has resulted in the blade being very slightly bent down. The two cutting edges have survived well, with some abrasions. The surfaces are corroded, with one far less so than the other thereby preserving a largely smooth, patinated surface. With the rest of the blade missing the knife measures 58.6 by 21.2 by 2.7mm and weighs 13.17g. Around half of the knife probably survives.

Tanged knives can be found illustrated in Rowlands (1976: refs. 1142-1152), with an example from Horningsea, Cambridgeshire (ref. 1147) also having a rectangular tang and flat mid-rib.
