Title
Bronze Age sword fragment
Description
English: A fragment of a copper-alloy sword of Late Bronze Age date.

The piece is sub-rectangular in plan, the patination of the breaks suggesting that the fragmentation (possibly deliberate) occurred in antiquity. On both sides is a wide mid rib, two flanking grooves and sides which taper towards the thin outer edges. The object measures 31mm long, 37mm wide and 7.9mm thick. It weighs 27.25g.

The form of this piece, with its pronounced mid rib, is typical of a Carp's Tongue sword - cf. similar fragments from a hoard at Stourmouth, Kent (Coombs and Bradshaw 1979: fig. 10.1, nos. 13-15). Carp's tongue material is typical of assemblages of north-western France, indicating overseas trade in the period of manufacture (the 8th century BC). Carp's tongue swords rarely turn up complete in Britain and fragments are often found in association with hoards.
