Title
Bronze Age spearhead (fragment)
Description
English: A copper-alloy fragment of a Middle to Late Bronze Age socketed spearhead.

The remaining portion is trapezoidal, the straight breaks at the top and bottom having occurred in antiquity. The central socket is conical, tapering towards the top and creating a mid-rib on both surfaces. Either side of this mid-rib the surfaces slope downwards, terminating in sharp edges, creating a roughly lozenge-shaped section. On one side the mid-rib is damaged, revealing what may be the point at which the socket terminates; alternatively, this may be the result of a concreted soil blockage. Nevertheless, the narrowness of the socket, and of the artefact in general, does suggest that this piece is from close to the tip of the spearhead. It is uncertain as to whether the breaks were created deliberately or were the result of accidental damage. The surfaces have a dark greenish-brown patina and are pitted in places.

Length: 26.2mm; width: 24.8mm; thickness: 9.1mm; weight: 15.47g.
