Title
Bronze Age socketed gouge (incomplete)
Description
English: An incomplete copper-alloy socketed gouge of Late Bronze Age date.

The socket is missing and the remainder of the artefact is also damaged. The hollow body is of U-shaped section, the depth and width of the groove increasing towards the thin, slightly convex cutting edge. The surface of the artefact bears a dark grey coating. The piece measures 57.4mm long, 18.4mm wide and 12.5mm thick. The weight is 40.97g.

Although relatively rare finds, there are a few examples of similar artefacts recorded on the PAS database, most from Wales and the Midlands - see, for example, NMGW-52C2A3, NMGW-75FE70, NMS-817C97, LEIC-4AC3D3, WMID-634197 and BH-078331. Socketed gouges are generally thought to be a product of the Wilburton phase of c. 1150-950BC, or of the Ewart Park phase of c. 950-750BC; most were probably made between c. 1000 and 800BC.
